Maui Mele
Words and Music through Human
Island/Calypso: EAB

Underneath the shade of the Banana tree, two lovers feed eachother happily
Water from the coco dribble down my chin and when the sun goes down is when the fun begins so,
Light the fire and the tikis too, dance to the rhythm underneath the moon
Now lets grab the blankets, its time to go, but you better watch your step when you’re walkin’ home.

Chorus:
You’ve got to, dodge the froggies to get back to the hui, take a right at the papayas and don’t wake the keiki,
Swat the mozzies, watch out for the kiawe,
Dodge the buffos and don’t wake the keiki.

Well the native Hawaiians believed the land was their elder,
They respected it a lot and they shared it with eachother,
With breadfruit and taro and the fish in the kai, surviving was living and it was simple and free,

In the Great Mahele of 1848,
the land was divided to an aweful fate
no longer an elder, it could be bought and sold
to feed the greed of the missionaries search for souls,
but no gold was found, all they found was rock,
so they exploited the aina and they mono-cropped the rock.
And today there’s a million tourists lining the streets,
Looking for Kahunas from their tour bus seat.

Chorus

Now everyone who visits here, can’t help but feel,
The love of these sacred islands here,
Yes there’s something in the air, its something in the sun, reminding us the people and the earth are one.
So live the aloha it’s a way of life, it means we honor that which feeds us, be pono and right,
So Mahalo to the aina, she gives us the mana to hitch to Haiku or to hike to Hanavana.

Chorus
