The Revolutionary List: 25 Watchmakers and Construction – Andreas Strehler
Few watchmakers have a signature as instantly recognizable as Andreas Strehler. Born in Winterthur in 1971, he trained in Switzerland before joining Renaud & Papi, where he cut his teeth on high complications. By 1995, he had founded his own atelier, making his intentions clear with the Papillon, a watch distinguished by butterfly-shaped bridges and an inventive calendar display that announced him as a voice apart.
Strehler has since become known for an obsession with precision. His Sauterelle à Lune Perpétuelle of 2013 paired a constant-force remontoir d’égalité with a moonphase so accurate it would deviate by a day only after two million years. Five years later, the Trans-Axial Remontoir took the idea further by combining a remontoir and tourbillon on a single axis — a technical tour de force that balanced efficiency with elegance.
In 2007, he took a sharp turn with the Harry Winston Opus 7, a mechanical sculpture that displayed time in a playful, digital-style format. He has also lent his talents to others, designing the ingenious perpetual calendar movement that became a calling card for H. Moser & Cie.
For more than two decades, Strehler has shown that watchmaking can be rigorous, inventive and poetic — all at once.
